PMC-Sierra, Inc. today announced the industry’s first demonstration of 10Gbit/s IEEE 802.3av EPON. The demonstration — based on PMC-Sierra’s complete reference designs for 10Gbit/s EPON, which include the PAS8001 for 10G Optical Line Terminals (OLT) and the PAS9001 for 10G Optical Network Units (ONU) — was conducted at OptiNet China, May 28-29, in Beijing, China. The reference designs integrate all the functionality required from an OLT and ONU running at 10Gbit/s, including third-party commercial transceivers, and leverage PMC-Sierra’s market-leading EPON capabilities to improve system performance and reduce OEMs’ time to market.

“CTC developed an EPON enterprise standard that has driven chipset and equipment vendors to ensure their solutions successfully achieve interoperability with it,” said Wang Bo, senior business associate manager of the Technical Department of China Telecom (CTC). “As a result, we have started quantity deployment. We are very interested in the new 10G EPON specification, IEEE 802.3av, and look forward to a version supporting unique CTC features, ensuring 10G EPON interoperability and a future smooth upgrade path from 1G EPON.”
