| Alcatel-Lucent touts Bell Labs OFDM optical transmission research |

Alcatel-Lucent says its research arm, Bell Labs, has demonstrated a 606-Gbps line rate using optical orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). The work was described in a paper delivered last month during the European Conference and Exhibition on Optical Communication (ECOC) in Turin, Italy. The 606-Gbps OFDM transmission ran over a distance of 1,600 km of fiber. The system uses OFDM with PDM 32-QAM subcarriers and detects the entire 606-Gbps multiplex in a single coherent detection step, Alcatel-Lucent asserts.
