China Telecom, Huawei, Corning test 3000-km 100G WDM in China

China Telecom, Huawei, and Corning Inc. have jointly announced completion of what they describe as China's first 100-Gbps WDM ultra long haul transmission test. The test also set a new record for 100G WDM transmission distance of over 3000 km in a terrestrial fiber system, the companies assert. China Telecom says it is looking for 100G WDM ultra-high-speed transmission technology as the successor to the 40G WDM transmission technology currently in its backbone network. The test featured coherent polarization multiplexed quadrature phase-shift keying (PM-QPSK) technology on Huawei's OSN 8800 platform. C-band 50-GHz-spacing and hybrid transmission of 100G and 40G were part of the test. Corning supplied its SMF-28 ULL ultra-low-loss optical fiber. SMF-28 ULL is an ITU-T G.652-compliant optical fiber that has ultra-low attenuation (average attenuation at 1550 nm: 0.168 dB/km) and polarization mode dispersion (PMD). Zhang Chengliang, deputy general engineer of China Telecom Beijing Research Institute, said, "This 100G WDM test, in collaboration with Huawei and Corning Inc., has demonstrated the positive outlook for 100G WDM applications.
