Huawei Technologies Co Ltd today announced what it claims is the successful development of its 100-Gbit/sec WDM prototype.

With a transmission distance of up to 2,000 km without using electrical regenerators, its 100G WDM prototype supports smooth upgrades from 10G/40G technologies, says Huawei. The company believes its innovation will further promote and accelerate the commercial use of 100G WDM-based networking.

The current boom in broadband services has created significant bandwidth demands, and 100G WDM technology represents the next generation in high-speed transport, say Huawei representatives. Operators can transmit 10 times the traffic compared to 10G WDM technology, which is the most widely deployed networking bandwidth. 100G WDM lays the foundation for telecom operators to deploy ultra-broadband services such as HDTV and multi-play in the future.
