OJSC Mobile TeleSystems, the leading telecommunications operator in Russia and the CIS, and Alcatel-Lucent (Euronext Paris and NYSE: ALU) today announced the modernization of MTS transport infrastructure by deploying a mobile IP network. MTS has selected Alcatel-Lucent’s IP/MPLS-based mobile backhaul solution to gain more flexibility and efficiency following the introduction of 3G mobile broadband services in its network. Alcatel-Lucent will deploy for MTS its AnyG to LTE backhaul solution capable of cost-effectively transporting voice and data traffic in GSM, UMTS and HSPA networks, while establishing a solid foundation for the future introduction of LTE.

The solutions introduction enables MTS to ensure scalable, evolvable, cost-efficient and fully managed IP-based transport capable to meet not only the current operator’s requirements but able to adapt to the increase in traffic for years to come. With the help of the deployed solution MTS will modernize its transport network in Moscow and St. Petersburg, the Central and the North-West Federal Districts.
